OBJECTIVE: Pharmacoresistant epilepsy is epilepsy in which, despite therapy, satisfactory disease control is not achieved. The success of treatment depends on the surgical removal of the epileptogenic focus. The aim of this paper is to define pharmacoresistant epilepsy, semiology of epileptic seizures, as well as to present the latest guidelines in the diagnostic treatment of pharmacoresistant epilepsy and explain the role of a nurse in the preoperative treatment of patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsy. METHOD: Two university textbooks, one handbook, three publications published by the Croatian Nursing Council, nine online sources and thirty professional and scientific articles published in scientific databases were used in writing this thesis. The inclusion criteria were the pieces of literature related to pharmacoresistant epilepsy and diagnostics, while the exclusion criteria referred to the literature older than thirteen years. TOPIC REVIEW: Pharmacoresistant epilepsy is epilepsy in which, despite drug therapy used as monotherapy or polytherapy, satisfactory disease control is not achieved. 30% of patients with epilepsy are pharmacoresistant. Today, with the help of modern diagnostics, the source of the epiletogenic focus is successfully detected, and the epiletogenic zone is removed by surgical methods. The nurse is relevant in the preoperative treatment of patients. She participates in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, continuously cares for the patient and has a primary role in the care of the patient's condition and the elimination of certain risks in accordance with the epileptologist's provisions. CONCLUSION: Due to their unsatisfactory disease control, patients with drug-resistant epilepsy often carry an increased risk of sudden death, impaired social functioning and poorer quality of life. With the development of modern medicine and surgery for epilepsy, patients with a pharmacoresistant form have been provided with more adequate treatment. The nurse is important in the preoperative treatment of patients; she participates in the diagnosis, takes care of epileptic seizures and prevents risks.
