Introduction: cardiovascular and emotional disorders share a common epidemiology, thus suggesting fundamental pathways connecting these different diseases. An increasing number of evidence in literature highlights the influence of psychological determinants in somatic diseases. Objective: to examine which emotional states affect patients with heart disease and to compare the answers of respondents according to sociodemographic variables. Methods: cross-sectional study. Results: significant difference was found within the results on the Anxiety Scale due to cardiac disease and according to the level of education of the respondents (P = 0.006). Significantly higher levels of depression were shown by respondents aged 81 and older (P = 0.02); and respondents who had completed primary school (P <0.001). There was also a significant difference in the results on the anxiety subscale according to the marital status (P = 0.02), it was found that significantly less anxiety was shown by married respondents (P <0.001). According to the place of residence and sex, no statistically significant difference was found in the respondents' responses. Conclusion: Anxiety and depression are meaningful conditions which affect patients with heart disease, with a statistically significant symptom being chest pain. Cardiac patients need to be encouraged to share and verbalize their feelings and frustrations along with a change in lifestyle habits that include daily walks in nature for a minimum of 30 minutes and a regular, varied diet. We have only one heart and it needs to be protected.
