Abstract
Cilj istraživanja: Cilj istraživanja bio je utvrditi hoće li se indeks tjelesne mase adolescenata prehrambene navike i žvačna funkcija promijeniti nakon postave ortodontskog aparata. Nacrt studije: Presječno istraživanje. Ispitanici i metode: U istraživanje je bio uključen 31 ispitanik, pacijent Doma zdravlja Osječko-baranjske županije. Isunjavali su upitnik o prehrani i žvakanju (Upitnik žvačne funkcije, CFQ) te se mjerio indeks tjelesne mase (BMI) u dva navrata – prije postave fiksne ortodontske naprave te nakon 6 tjedna ortodontskog liječenja. Rezultati: Četiri ispitanika su odustala te je analiziran 27 ispitanik, dobi 13-17 godina (medijan 15 godina), 16/27 (59 %) ženskog spola. Tijekom ortodontskog liječenja značajno se smanjio BMI (P = 0,041; r = - 0,393) i povećala narušenost žvačne funkcije (P < 0,001; r = - 0,726) uz veću veličinu efekta kod žvačne funkcije. Kad se gledaju zasebno elementi CFQ ortodontsko liječenje znatno utječe na zaostajanje hrane (P = 0,002; r = - 0,601), odgrizanje (P = 0,038; r = - 0,400) te žvakanje salate (P = 0,041; r = - 0,392). Kod ostalih elemenata CFQ razlika prije i poslije postave ortodontske naprave nije bila značajna. Promjena žvačne funkcije nije korelirala s promjenom BMI nit dobi i spolom. Zaključak: Ortodontsko liječenje smanjuje žvačnu funkciju i indeks tjelesne mase. Efekt je uglavnom na odgrizanje hrane i zadržavanje hrane između zubi i ortodontske naprave.
Abstract (english)
Objective: The aim of the research was to determine whether adolescents’ body mass index, eating habits and chewing function will change after the placement of an orthodontic appliance. Study plan: Cross-sectional study. Participants and Methodology: The study included 31 subjects, patients of the Osijek-Baranja County Health Center. The subjects filled a questionnaire on nutrition and chewing (Masticatory Function Questionnaire, Chewing Function Questionnaire - CFQ) and their body mass index (BMI) was measured on two occasions - before the placement of a fixed orthodontic appliance and after 6 weeks of orthodontic treatment. Results: Four subjects dropped out and 27 subjects were analyzed, ages 13 - 17 years old (median 15 years old), where 16/27 (59%) were female. During orthodontic treatment, BMI was significantly decreased (P = 0.041; r = - 0.393) and masticatory function impairment increased (P < 0.001; r = - 0.726) with a larger effect size for masticatory function. When the CFQ elements are viewed separately, orthodontic treatment has a significant effect on food retention (P = 0.002; r = - 0.601), biting (P = 0.038; r = - 0.400) and salad chewing (P = 0.041; r = - 0.392). The other CFQ elements showed no significant difference before and after orthodontic appliance placement. The change in masticatory function did not correlate with the change in BMI, age and sex. Conclusion: Orthodontic treatment reduces chewing function and body mass index. The effect was mainly present in biting off food and retaining food between the teeth and the orthodontic device.
