Introduction. Acute ischemic stroke is a disorder of brain function, the sudden onset of which results in a disturbance of cerebral circulation in which blood flow through the brain is insufficient and leads to the death of brain cells. Procedures. Literature in the field of Neurology from the National and University Library in Zagreb, and Ksaver Šandor Gjalski Library in Zabok was used in this thesis. Chapters in books and anatomical atlases were also researched. The research collected data from scientific databases: Hrčak, Medline, Medscape and Scopus, from which articles were downloaded in PDF format. Topic outline. The goal of a modern therapeutic approach is to recanalize a blood vessel in order to establish or improve blood flow to damaged brain cells as soon as possible. The longer the period of time from the interruption of the blood supply to the brain cells, the greater their irreversible damage, and thus the greater the risk of disability and the risk of death. Recanalization is achieved by thrombolysis or mechanical thrombectomy. Nursing care includes assessment of the patient’s neurological condition over 24 hours, as well as care during the application of the recanalization procedure itself. Conclusion. The guidelines for the treatment of a stroke provide information on the implementation of recanalization therapy, show the right course, determine the right time period for the application of therapy, in which cases it is necessary, and in which it is not. Effective recanalization treatment significantly reduces mortality and the consequences of a stroke.
