INTRODUCTION: The sense of sight provides basic information about the space around us, enabling orientation in space, and it has a significant impact on everyday human life. One of the main descriptors of the visual function is the visual field, ie the area within which a person can obtain visual information, while constantly fixing his gaze on the central point. Visual field examination is an examination performed to detect an outburst in the patient's visual field. METHOD: Information was collected from scientific databases which included scientific and professional articles and websites related to the topic of visual field testing in ophtalmic diagnostics. The following databases were searched: Medline, Researchgate, PubMed, Hrčak and Google Schoolar. OUTLINE: The visual field is the entire area that can be seen when the eye is directed forward, including the area seen by peripheral vision. Visual field testing is the only method that allows research of the each part of the visual system. Perimeter or visual field testing is a diagnostic procedure that has been used for more than 100 years, and although changes in device technology and testing strategies are taking place surprisingly quickly, the basic principles of conventional perimetry still apply today. CONCLUSION: Visual field assessment is an important clinical tool in the assessment of patients with acute and chronic eye and/or neurological diseases and is often considered to be a fundamental diagnostic method in ophthalmology. Perimetry enables several important diagnostic functions, such as early detection of abnormalities, differential diagnosis, monitoring of progression and remission and detection of unnoticed visual impairments. Also, it enables earlier detection of progression with statistical reliability.
