THE RESEARCH AIM: To analyse the attitudes and knowledge of male and female students at the Medical School in Karlovac about vaccination against HPV virus. STUDY DRAFT: Cross-sectional study with a suitable sample. RESPONDENTS AND METHODS: The respondents are students at the Medical School in Karlovac who, with the informed consent of their parents, filled out an anonymous questionnaire. The questionnaire consists of questions related to demographic data, 5 questions about the basic concepts of HPV, 12 questions related to awareness of the existence of HPV vaccines and 4 questions about the acceptability of the vaccine. All questions have multiple answers with the possibility of circling off one of them. RESULTS: The results showed that students of all ages in the sample have a high level of knowledge about HPV (over 90%), however there is a slightly higher number of fifth graders who think that HPV infection is common, and that HPV usually disappears on its own without treatment. Regarding the awareness of the HPV vaccine considering the grade that the respondents attend, there is a significant difference between the fifth-grade students who believe that the HPV vaccine prevents cervical cancer (79.2%) compared to the first-grade students (55.2%; P=0.049). Also, 66.7% of the fifth-grade students believe that the HPV vaccine does not protect against all types of cervical cancer compared to the first-grade students (48.3%; P=0.028). CONCLUSION: Students at the Medical School in Karlovac in general have a high level of knowledge about HPV. The fifth-grade female students are more open to be vaccinated against HPV infection, this number is higher among the fifth graders compared to the first-grade female students. There is no difference in knowledge about HPV between students in lower and upper grades. Students who live in the city to a significant extent want to be more informed about HPV compared to students who live in the countryside.
