Aim: The aim of the research was to determine students’ awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco products among students of dental medicine in Osijek. Study outline: This research was organized as a cross-sectional study in the city of Osijek. Materials and methods: 76 students of dental medicine at the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Health Osijek were involved in the survey. All participants were of age, and they voluntarily participated in the research, which was completely anonymous. The research was conducted from the end of July to mid-September 2022 via Google Forms application. Results: Out of 76 participants, 34 consumed tobacco products and 42 did not consume tobacco products. Out of 34 participants who were smokers, years of smoking ranged between 1 and 25 years. Students of different genders had a statistically significant difference in their awareness of the harm of smoking cigarettes (P = 0.029). This awareness was higher among male participants compared to female participants (43.97 > 34.07). Preclinical study students had lower awareness of the harmfulness of tobacco consumption compared to clinical study students (34,69 < 38,95). However, this difference is not statistically significant (P = 0.562). There is no statistically significant relationship between the fact that the participant is a smoker or a nonsmoker and awareness of the dangers of smoking. Conclusion: The conducted research found that among students of dental medicine there is a high awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco products on health. Students of different genders have a statistically significant difference in their awareness of the harm of smoking cigarettes. That awareness is higher among male respondents compared to female respondents. Considering the level of study, students of preclinical studies have a lower awareness of the harm of tobacco consumption compared to students of clinical studies. However, this difference is not statistically significant.
