Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the dietary habits of individuals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and determine their impact on glycemic balance. Specific objectives include analyzing the relationship between the frequency of consumption of different food groups and HbA1c levels and comparing dietary habits between individuals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In addition, the attitudes of patients towards the effects of proper nutrition on disease regulation were examined. Study design: Cross-sectional study. Respondents and methods: The study was conducted among patients of the Vuk Vrhovac College Hospital, Merkur College Hospital, suffering from type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Data were collected using a customized questionnaire to assess dietary habits, and statistical data was processed using the SPSS program. The study adhered to the ethical standards approved by the relevant ethics committees and the participants provided consent. Results: The results of the study show that the majority of participants (96 %) believe that a proper diet can regulate diabetes. Overall, 42% of participants had HbA1c levels ≤ 7, while 58% had HbA1c levels > 7. Statistically significant differences in dietary habits were found in the consumption of potatoes and olive oil, where participants with higher HbA1c levels were more likely to consume potatoes twice a week (P = 0.009) and less likely to consume olive oil two or more times a day (P = 0.047). Furthermore, there were no significant differences in dietary habits between people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Conclusion: The study concludes that people with diabetes should be informed about proper nutrition, while also taking into account the individual dietary guidelines for the different types of diabetes. People with type 1 and type 2 diabetes have different dietary habits, but most believe that diet has a positive affect on disease regulation. Key dietary recommendations include reducing the consumption of foods with a high glycemic index, such as potatoes, and greater consumption of foods that can improve blood glucose regulation, such as olive oil and nuts.
