INTRODUCTION: Aging is an irreversible process, and it takes place differently in humans, and it begins at birth. Aging is a process which implies a gradual loss of function, where tissues and organs are subject to change. The aim of this paper is to determine what the changes are that occur in the musculoskeletal system and how to react in time and ensure long-term functional ability of the older people. PROCEDURES: The information used for the preparation of this graduate thesis was obtained by searching the professional literature from the scientific databases PubMed and Medline. The search retrieved 165 references, and 60 of them were included in this paper. TOPIC REVIEW: During the aging process, changes in the appearance and function of the organism gradually occur. The human body is dependent on movement, and the aging process causes changes in the systems that are most important for movement, namely the locomotor and muscular system, but other systems such as visual, vestibular, cardiovascular and others are not spared changes. It is necessary to achieve the maximum functional ability of the elderly, which means independence and autonomy in performing the activities of everyday life and improving its quality. These changes are part of the normal life cycle. CONCLUSION: Prevention is half health. Performing physical activity and exercise can have a positive effect on reducing the risks that arise with age. In geriatric patients, the term active aging is important because it refers to aging, which in addition to the already mentioned physical activity includes mental activity and participation in activities such as social, cultural and other activities.
