Aim of the research: To examine the differences in the pregnant women’s knowledge and perception of toxoplasmosis with regard to age, education, place of residence, trimester of pregnancy and having a pet cat. To examine the connection between knowledge and perception with the way of informing and predictors of knowledge about toxoplasmosis. Subjects and methods: The study involved 172 pregnant women aged 18 to 45. Data was collected through an anonymous survey, using Google Sheets. Results: 172 pregnant women participated in the study. 51 subjects who own a pet cat appeared to have a significantly better perception and knowledge of toxoplasmosis. There are differences in the awareness of the disease with respect to age. Pregnant women under the age of 25 have a better perception and knowledge about toxoplasmosis. The subjects appeared to have a lack of knowledge about the mode of transmission of toxoplasmosis. 129 subjects claimed that they were not informed about toxoplasmosis by their gynaecologist and nurse, while the largest percentage of subjects were informed on the Internet. The subjects want to be familiarised with preventive measures against a T. Gondii infection by primary health care workers. Conclusion: Considering the pregnant women’s limited knowledge and perception of toxoplasmosis and improper methods of obtaining information, continuous education about toxoplasmosis and other infectious diseases with the potential for congenital transmission is recommended. Improving education in the primary health care system would be helpful in disease prevention and consequently in the prevention of congenital toxoplasmosis. Extensive preventive measures are needed, accompanied by public health and education policies that take into account economic, social, environmental and cultural aspects.
