Objectives: To examine frequency of complications of breastfeeding by mothers, relation between complications in breastfeeding with the number of children and relation between complications in breastfeeding with the way of childbirth. Study Design: The research was carried out prospectively and partly retrospectively. It lasted from January 1st, 2020 to May 1st, 2021. The data obtained through anonymous survey questionnaires were collected from mothers who had childbirth in the period of research in Dom zdravlja Zagreb Zapad (Health Centre Zagreb West) where the health visitor worked. Participants and methods: 128 mothers participated in this research. They came from various age groups and different socio-economic background. The research based on survey questionnaire exclusively aiming this research was conducted by the research leader. She explored relationships between mothers of various age groups, different number of children and different ways of childbirth. The frequency of individual complication of breastfeeding by mother as well as ways of solving complications were explored regarding the way of childbirth and the number of children mother has. Results: Complications of breastfeeding by mothers are more often with primiparous women. The biggest number of complications occurs in maternity hospitals. The most frequent complication is congestive breast and sore and damaged nipples – ‘ragade’. Mothers have solved the greatest number of complications without visiting a doctor and just a few of them have decided to stop breastfeeding due to complications. The way of childbirth essentially doesn't affect on incidence of complications in breastfeeding caused by mothers. Conclusion: The need for better education of pregnant women occurred because of higher frequency of complications with primiparous women. It proved to be necessary securing availability of professionals educated for help and support. Complications in breastfeeding are rare and they shouldn't be the reason for cessation of breastfeeding. Most of these complications can be prevented and with the correct interventions they can be removed.
