THE RESEARCH AIM: The aim of the research is to determine the frequency of poisoning in children according to hospital morbidity in the Clinical Hospital Center Zagreb during the period from 2015 to 2020. The specific objectives are to examine the relationship between the age group and the type of toxic agents as well as to examine the relationship between the age group and gender. STUDY DRAFT: Retrospective study. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Data were collected from the Hospital Information System. The data which were used in the study refer to hospitalized children aged 0 to 18 who were diagnosed with poisoning at the Clinical Hospital Center Zagreb during the period from 2015 to 2020. RESULTS: During the five-year period, from 2015 to 2020, a total of 869 children diagnosed with poisoning were treated at the Clinical Hospital Center Zagreb, of which 686 (68.9%) required outpatient treatment, while 183 (21.1%) required hospitalization. Out of the total number of hospitalized children diagnosed with poisoning, 166 (90.1%) of them required care in the hospital ward of the Pediatric Clinic, while 7 (3.9%) children required treatment in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Pediatric Clinic. CONCLUSION: The highest number of poisonings in children occurs in the age group from 0 to 6 years in both genders. In the five-year period, out of the total number of hospitalized children with poisoning, there were slightly more boys than girls. In the age group from 15 to 18 years, there were more hospitalized girls diagnosed with poisoning than boys. In the age group from 0 to 6 years, the most common cause of poisoning in both genders was antiepileptic poisoning. In the age groups from 7 to 14 and 15 to 18 years, the most common cause of poisoning was exposure to carbon monoxide. The most common external cause of poisoning in both genders is unknown.
