Objectives: To investigate the association between dysphagia and nutritional status in patients with neurological diseases. Study design: A cross-sectional study. Participants and Methods: The participants were patients with neurological diseases. The research was conducted from January to April 2022. Anonymous survey method was used and the questionnaire contained general data, Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10) and Nutrition Risk Screening 2002 (NRS 2002). Results: The research included 91 neurological patients with dysphagia. Of these patients, 60 (65 %) had normal nutritional status according to their BMI values, while according to NRS 2002 score 45 patients (49 %) were at medium risk and 38 patients (42 %) were at high risk of mulnutrition. The increased risk of aspiration and severe dysphagia was present in malnourished patients (2 test, P = 0.02) and patients at high nutritional risk (2 test, P < 0.001). Patients with long-lasting multiple sclerosis had severe dysphagia, increased risk of aspiration and high nutritional risk, while patients with polyneuropathies were statistically significantly at no nutritional risk. Patients who answered the questions regarding subjective assessment of chewing and swallowing affirmatively, were at significantly higher risk of aspiration, had severe dysphagia (2 test, P < 0.001) and high nutritional risk (2 test, P < 0.001). There was no significant correlation between age, dysphagia and nutritional status. Conclusion: Patients with neurological diseases who have dysphagia are at nutritional risk. It is therefore necessary to apply suitable measures to relieve dysphagia and maintain or improve the nutritional status of patients.
