Objectives: To examine the frequency of fatal events, attitudes, fear and empathy of nurses towards the death and dying of patients, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and work in COVID units, the need for education and support, and differences with regard to the workplace and age. Study design: A cross-sectional study. Participants and Methods: The research was conducted in March and April 2022 at KBC Osijek on 80 nurses between the ages of 20 and 60, with different professional backgrounds, employed at the clinics: Anesthesiology, Resuscitation and Intensive Care, Orthopedics and Traumatology, and Infectology. The data were collected online by filling out a specially created questionnaire. They are shown in absolute and relative frequencies. The statistical methods used were Fisher's exact, Shapiro – Wilk, Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis and Chi-square test. Statistical significance was set at 0.05. Results: The majority of the respondents were female, had a secondary vocational education and were 25-30 years old. 55% worked at the COVID units. The COVID pandemic influenced a change of opinion about death and dying of patients in 62.5 %, and work at COVID units in 67.8 % of respondents. There was no difference in the level of fear according to workplaces, and no correlation between age and attitudes towards death. Respondents employed at the Clinic for Anesthesiology, Reanimation and Intensive Care expressed the least empathy towards death. The results showed that 96.3% of respondents believe that the staff at the COVID units need psychological support, and 85% believe that there is a need for additional education. Conclusion: In the COVID wards, there is a need for professional psychological support and additional training for nurses. Nurses who most often encounter death have the least empathy.
