THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF CHILDREN WITH ASTHMA IN THE AREA OF BROD-POSAVINA COUNTY Research aim: To investigate the quality of life of children with asthma through an assessment of children and their parents and to compare their assessments, and to compare the assessmentsof the quality of life of children with asthma and those of their healthy peers. The risk factors that influence the assessment of the quality of life were analysed. Study design: case-control Subjects and methods: 128 children (64 children with asthma and 64 healthy children) and 128 of their parentswere included. All subjects completed a standardized general questionnaire for the assessment of the quality of life in pediatric population (PedsQL Generic Core Scales), and subjects with asthma and their parents completed a questionnaire module designed for asthma (PedsQL 3.0 Asthma Module). Results: The overall quality of life score reported by children with asthma is 79.29. The self-assessment of the quality of life in children with asthma is lowered by asthma symptoms, as well as by concerns about the effects of the chronic disease and effectiveness and effects of the medications. The overall quality of life score of children with asthma reported by parents is 74.63. The parents' assessment of the quality of life of their children with asthma is lowered by concerns about the effects of the chronic illness, the effectiveness and effects of the medications and symptoms of asthma. The parents of children with asthma rate their children's quality of life lower than their children themselves. Among the factors that may influence the assessment of the quality of life, it has been observed that children with moderately severe or severe asthma rate their quality of life significantly lower than children with mild asthma. The gender of the subjects, either parents or children, has not influenced the assessment of the quality of life. When a general quality of life questionnaire in the pediatric population was applied, no difference in quality assessment was observed between healthy and sick children. Conclusion: The assessment of the quality of life in children with asthma is an indispensable factor in asthma monitoring as it examines various components of a patient's medical condition. The parents, with their personal perception of the quality of life of their children, are an important participant in a treatment, especially in preschool and school children, while in adolescents, the parents' assessment is complementary to that of the child. The factors affecting the quality of life need to be explored, using various therapeutic measures for their mitigation.
