INTRODUCTION: Stress leads to dysregulation of homeostasis and can trigger the onset or worsening of pre-existing diseases in all systems of the human body. The biggest changes can be seen in the immune system, cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal system and mental health. PROCEDURES: 107 papers of medical research, both in English and Croatian language, on stress and its treatment from Pubmed, Medline, Cochrane, Hrčak and books were implemented. TOPIC OVERVIEW: Stress presents its negative impact from intrauterine development to old age. It is inevitable, but excessive exposure to stress encourages the creation of diseases. Therefore, it is crucial to implement interventions that will help in its suppression and control. A diet based on fruits and vegetables, physical activity, breathing exercises, yoga, meditation, and massage techniques are the most commonly used inspections for its successful regulation. Physiotherapists with psychological physiotherapy will enable faster healing of the patient and reduce his/her time spent in an inpatient facility for rehabilitation medicine. CONCLUSION: Stress can be successfully controlled by various psychological interventions. Deep breathing with inhalation through the nose and exhalation through the mouth has an immediate effect on reducing plasma cortisol levels, which can be extremely helpful in acute stress conditions. Chronic stress requires the application of multiple interventions, and educating patients about its negative reactions to the health of the organism is the first line of defense against the prolongation of stress.
