INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, that has a complex clinical picture and often leads to severe physical and cognitive impairment. PROCEDURE: The data was collected by searching Medline, The Scopus and Web of Science databases. OVERVIEW: Multiple sclerosis is a disease that has a complex clinical course, consisting of four types: relapsing-remitting, secondary progressive, primary progressive and progressive relapsing type. The development of multiple sclerosis is influenced by genetic predisposition and environmental factors. About 2,2 million people suffer from multiple sclerosis and its typically affecting patients between 20 and 40 years of age. The pathology of disease includes inflammation, formation of focal lesions and demyelination of the white and grey matter of the central nervous system. The most common symptoms of multiple sclerosis are spasticity, muscle weakness, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, bladder dysfunction and visual dysfunction. The pharmacological treatment of multiple sclerosis consists of disease-modifying drugs and symptomatic therapy, while rehabilitation includes physiotherapy. occupational therapy, cognitive therapy and psychological therapy. The most important method of physiotherapy is kinesitherapy, and the most effective exercises are aerobic exercises. In addition to kinesitherapy, hydrotherapy, cryotherapy and electrotherapy are also used. These types of therapies have a beneficial effect on reducing symptoms and improving functional abilities. CONCLUSION: Multiple sclerosis is a severe and limiting disease and its treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach and cooperation of people with different professions. They help to improve impaired functional abilities but also better the quality of patient's life, as well as their family's.
